Position Summary

The Apprentice Mechanic III (M4) performs a broad range of mechanical installation and maintenance tasks with minimal supervision while completing the final stages of apprenticeship training. This role demonstrates advanced technical ability, sound safety judgment, and readiness to transition to journeyman status.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform mechanical installations and assemblies with minimal supervision

• Install piping, equipment, ductwork, and mechanical components in accordance with drawings and specifications

• Read, interpret, and apply mechanical drawings, specifications, and work instructions

• Perform layout, measurements, and alignment of mechanical systems

• Assist with rigging, lifting, and positioning of equipment under supervision

• Support system testing, inspections, and verification of completed work

• Assist in troubleshooting mechanical systems and identifying root causes

• Verify work quality and ensure compliance with company standards and project requirements

• Mentor and assist junior apprentices and helpers

• Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas

• Participate in job hazard analyses (JHAs), toolbox talks, and safety meetings

• Follow established safety procedures, codes, and quality standards

• Report hazards, near misses, and incidents immediately

• Accept coaching and feedback from journeymen, lead mechanics, and foremen

• Perform other duties as assigned consistent with advanced apprenticeship responsibilities

Qualifications

• Active participation in and near completion of an approved mechanical apprenticeship program

• Demonstrated advanced mechanical skill and trade knowledge

• Ability to work independently while recognizing limits of authority

• Strong attention to detail and quality workmanship

Tools & Equipment
• Must provide and maintain personal basic hand tools customary to the mechanical trade
• All personal tools must be in safe working condition and comply with company and jobsite safety requirements
• Specialty tools, power tools, testing equipment, and consumables will be provided by the company

Experience
• Typically 3–4 years of mechanical trade experience
Physical Requirements
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and work overhead for extended periods
• Ability to climb ladders, scaffolds, and elevated work platforms
• Ability to work in confined spaces and around moving equipment as required
• Ability to work in hot, cold, dusty, noisy, or wet environments
• Ability to wear required PPE, including hard hat, gloves, safety glasses, steel-toe boots, and fall protection
Work Environment
• Industrial and commercial construction jobsites
• Indoor and outdoor work environments
• Exposure to mechanical systems, construction hazards, and heavy equipment
• Work hours may include nights, weekends, and overtime as required
Supervision
• Works under limited supervision of a Journeyman Mechanic, Lead Mechanic, or Foreman
Safety Expectations
• Comply with all company, client, and jobsite safety policies and procedures
• Demonstrate advanced hazard recognition and safe work practices
• Participate actively in safety meetings and safety planning
• Stop work and notify supervision if unsafe conditions are identified
Career Progression
Successful performance in this role supports advancement to Journeyman Mechanic (M5) based on completion of apprenticeship requirements, demonstrated competency, safety performance, and leadership readiness.

Required Certifications and Training

• OSHA 30-hour Construction Safety

• Completion of required apprenticeship classroom and on-the-job training

• Jobsite-specific and company-required safety training
