Position Summary

The Journeyman Mechanic (M5) performs independent mechanical installation, maintenance, and repair work in accordance with project specifications, drawings, and industry standards. This role demonstrates advanced technical skills, problem-solving ability, and full compliance with safety and quality requirements. The Journeyman serves as a mentor to apprentices and helpers and may direct small work crews under supervision.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Independently install, maintain, and repair mechanical systems, components, and equipment

• Read, interpret, and apply mechanical drawings, blueprints, and specifications

• Perform precise layout, measurement, alignment, and assembly of mechanical systems

• Operate hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic/testing equipment safely and effectively

• Troubleshoot mechanical systems and recommend corrective actions

• Verify work quality and ensure compliance with company standards, project specifications, and regulatory codes

• Mentor and provide guidance to apprentices (M2–M4) and helpers (M1)

• Assist lead mechanics or foremen with crew oversight as required

• Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas

• Participate in job hazard analyses (JHAs), toolbox talks, and safety meetings

• Follow all company and client safety policies, procedures, and regulations

• Identify unsafe conditions or behaviors and stop work if necessary

• Perform other duties as assigned consistent with journeyman-level responsibilities

Qualifications

• Completion of an approved mechanical NCCER certification or equivalent program

• Demonstrated mastery of mechanical trade skills and technical knowledge

• Ability to work independently and make sound trade-related decisions

• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail

• Ability to train, coach, and mentor junior personnel

Required Certifications and Training

• OSHA 30-hour Construction Safety

• Jobsite-specific safety and compliance training

• Any required trade-specific certifications (e.g., welding, rigging, pressure systems)

• Ongoing participation in continuing education and company training programs

Tools & Equipment

• Must provide and maintain personal hand tools customary to the mechanical trade

• Must maintain tools in safe working condition, compliant with company and jobsite safety standards

• Company provides specialty tools, power tools, consumables, and testing equipment

Experience
• Typically 4–6 years of mechanical trade experience, including apprenticeship completion
Physical Requirements
• Ability to lift up to 50–75 pounds regularly
• Ability to stand, walk, kneel, crouch, bend, and work overhead for extended periods
• Ability to climb ladders, scaffolds, and elevated work platforms
• Ability to work in confined spaces, at heights, and around moving equipment
• Ability to work in varying environmental conditions: hot, cold, wet, dusty, or noisy
• Ability to wear required PPE, including hard hat, gloves, safety glasses, steel-toe boots, and fall protection
Work Environment
• Industrial and commercial construction jobsites
• Exposure to mechanical systems, construction hazards, and heavy equipment
• Work may include indoor and outdoor environments, including elevated or confined spaces
• Work hours may include nights, weekends, and overtime as required
Supervision
• Works under general supervision of Lead Mechanic (M6) or Foreman (M7)
• Provides mentorship and guidance to apprentices (M2–M4) and helpers (M1)
Safety Expectations
• Comply with all company, client, and jobsite safety policies and procedures
• Demonstrate leadership in hazard recognition and safe work practices
• Mentor junior personnel on safe work practices
• Stop work and notify supervision if unsafe conditions are observed
